Kenwood PTA History
For over eighty years, the Kenwood School PTA has been a very significant organization within the Kenwood community. In its early days the yearly dues were fifteen cents, average attendance at monthly PTA events exceeded 150 people, several child study and book review groups were meeting regularly in Kenwood homes and for those who couldn’t attend there was the Radio Child Study Club, student music enhanced every regular monthly PTA meeting, a dollar bought ten issues of the national PTA magazine, and “galloping breakfasts” were held in homes as fundraisers. The Kenwood PTA was closely linked to the several Blue Bird groups, the Camp Fire groups, Cub and Boy Scout dens, and Horizon Club chapters, as well as activities at the two main churches within the Kenwood area. There was an annual Dad’s Night, ice cream socials, a teacher appreciation dinner, afternoon teas with speakers, rummage sales, and even an adult lending library run totally by the PTA containing parenting and inspirational materials. Whenever there was a call to help students, families, and teachers within the Kenwood community, the Kenwood PTA was there with various clever and effective ways to solve any problems and fulfill any needs. The Kenwood PTA, staff, and students also participated in many citywide, nationwide, and even worldwide causes where assistance was needed.
Today, the PTA is still present and very active at Kenwood Elementary School. PTA meetings are generally held on the first Tuesday of every month from 6:00-7:15 p.m. in the Kenwood IMC.
